painting by christina carroll |

I met my dear friend Christina on the first day of beginning art class while attending junior college.  She walked into the classroom and just oozed cool and confidence.  She had a silver nose ring and a tiny star tattoo on her ankle.  She was loud, with a big voice and even bigger hair.  She was my polar opposite, but from that first moment I saw her, I wanted to be her friend.  Fast forward eleven years, two college degrees, marriages, first home purchases, and one adorable baby boy (hers, not mine) and I’m still so happy that I get to call her my friend.  Even if we don’t talk or get to see each other as much as we used to, it just feels like we can pick up where we left off each time.  One of the best kinds of friendship, in my opinion.

For my thirtieth birthday this year, she took me out for drinks and unveiled this gorgeous painting.  One that I’d been wanting for years, but never knew what it looked like.  This girl just gets me.  And especially my taste in art. The best part?  She painted it just for me.  An original, my friends.  How lucky am I?

So here it is, friends.  One of the best gifts I’ve ever received.  I wanted to take a picture and show it off.  It brightens up my living room in the best way and I love how it just pops against the grey wall in our living room. Thank you, Tina, from the bottom of my heart. I love you, friend.

Desert Fox by Kayla King for |
I’m excited to announce that my art print Desert Fox is now available for sale on! I’ve been waiting a while for this one to launch, so I’m super excited to share that the day is here!  I created the print in three different colorways in the hopes that THIS fantastic Mr. Fox will find a home in a little boy OR little girl’s room.

I put together a little nursery inspiration below, how I would design a nursery around this piece. I imagine a little explorer, curious about the stars and planets in the sky and the animals and bugs on the earth.  Mint, yellow, and neutrals round out the room with a simple white crib anchoring the space.

Alexander |
My hoard collection of vintage children’s books has been growing for awhile, so I thought I’d share some of my favorites with you. This is one I picked up over the weekend. Alexander by Harold Littledale and illustrated by Tom Vroman. I love searching for these old books. The illustrations are fantastic; certainly some have a very vintage look to them, which I just adore. This is a first edition, published in 1964.  It’s definitely worn, but I don’t really collect these old books for their value.  I just love finding inspiration in old things sometimes. I photographed some of my favorite pages to share here.  I hope you love the illustrations as much as I do!

We have this huge wall in our house, right when you walk in the front door that’s been begging me to put art on it since we bought our house. So….about 4 years now. I’ve been collecting some smaller prints and photos, but I think anchoring the whole arrangement with a big statement print would be freaking fantastic. What do you think?  I love the bold red in that cat print, but a more subtle pattern like the lower right gold print would just really class up the joint.

I (finally!) got a new sketchbook over the weekend and had a lot of fun testing out some new illustration styles. I’m going back to my art school style and trying to be looser in my sketching. Below are a few of the pieces I’m working on.

A friend of mine recently threw a birthday party for her two-year-old son in which she asked for guests to bring books instead of toys or cards.  I had the best time picking out books for the little man.  One of my favorite illustrators is Oliver Jeffers, so I had to pick up his latest book, This Moose Belongs To Me. It’s really gorgeous and I would be lying if I said it was easy for me to give it away.  Today I thought I’d share with you lovely readers a snippet of work from one of the people that inspires me most.  Enjoy!

All images via Oliver Jeffers except for the quilt story, which is via Anthropologie.

I was so excited when this month’s issue of Sunset Magazine came in the mail…because I got a small mention!  My work is featured in a great article about and I couldn’t be more thrilled.  I had a really hard time keeping my mouth shut about this since I’ve known since October, but I’m happy to share the article with everyone.

Seriously, though, Minted has really given independent artists like me a shot at sharing artwork with a much wider audience than I could possible go at alone, so for that I’m grateful and so happy to be a part of the Minted team. I meant what I said, the ladies and gents of the design community at Minted are the best.  I’ve made a lot of new friends and gotten lots of advice from more seasoned designers, and not once has anyone ever held back on sharing their design/lettering/printing secrets.  I feel very fortunate to have found Minted and hope I get to design for them for as long as I can.

P.S. Have you ordered your holiday cards yet?  Click on the link at the top right for a special discount!

P.P.S. I just got my hands on Minted’s new Triple Thick cards and WOW!  If you’ve got the extra dough to throw down, I couldn’t recommend the quality of the product highly enough.  Love it!
